How to Keep Your Dog Safe from Merlot: Risks and Symptoms

Introduction

When it comes to hosting dinner parties or enjoying a glass of wine at home, many pet owners tend to overlook the risks associated with offering their pets scraps. While it may seem harmless to give your furry friend a sip of wine, the reality is that human foods can be toxic to animals in high amounts.

For this article, we will be focusing on one specific type of wine: Merlot. With its rich flavor and smooth texture, Merlot has become a staple in many households around the world. However, when it comes to our canine companions, moderation may not be enough, as even small amounts can cause severe health issues.

It's essential for pet owners to consider pet safety when introducing new foods, especially those with unknown ingredients or potential toxins. As such, this article serves as a reminder of the importance of exercising caution and proper handling procedures when it comes to feeding your dog human foods like Merlot.

The Case for Concerns

Research has shown that consuming large amounts of wine can be toxic to dogs due to the presence of ethanol (or ethyl alcohol). Ethanol is highly concentrated in wines, beers, and spirits, making them particularly hazardous for pets. If ingested by dogs, ethanol can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, lack of coordination, drowsiness, or even coma.

One study published in the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation found that when a 10-pound dog (approximately 4.5 kg) consumed an estimated 1.75 ounces (50 ml) of whiskey, which contains similar amounts of ethanol as wine, the canine developed severe symptoms and ultimately expired due to complications arising from ethanol poisoning.

When dogs ingest Merlot or any type of wine, it is essential for pet owners to seek veterinary care immediately, as prompt treatment can help alleviate adverse reactions. It's crucial to call your veterinarian right away if your dog displays signs of lethargy, drowsiness, loss of coordination in their limbs (ataxia), tremors, muscle rigidity or spasms.

Symptoms like this will only worsen unless addressed swiftly and with caution. Some pet owners may inadvertently assume the dangers associated with Merlot consumption are minimal because it doesn't seem “stronger” on a per serving basis as compared to other beverages that they typically associate danger with (which are typically higher in ethanol percentage).
